I thought it would be interesting to take one scene from the novel Jane Eyre and then take the script from comparable scenes in the films and compare them. I know that there can be much more that is added to the scene by the actors than just the words from the script can say, so I also made audio clips to try and capture the essence. (*note- it would be best to right-click the link and select "save link as") To download all the clips at once, click HERE (a clip from the 1972 radio series, and from the Toronto cast of Jane Eyre the Musical is included)

The scene I chose is from 'the proposal' (Chapter 23 or Chapter 8 when the novel is divided up into three volumes). I generally tried to start from "My bride is here" or some mention of Blanche Ingram/declaration of love from Rochester, and end when Jane says "Then sir, I will marry you" or the equivalent. Sometimes the equivalent is just kissing.

"JANE EYRE" BY CHARLOTTE BRONTE

"My bride is here," he said, again drawing me to him, "because my equal is here, and my likeness. Jane, will you marry me?"

Still I did not answer, and still I writhed myself from his grasp: for I was still incredulous.

"Do you doubt me, Jane?"

"Entirely."

"You have no faith in me?"

"Not a whit."

"Am I a liar in your eyes?" he asked passionately. "Little sceptic, you SHALL be convinced. What love have I for Miss Ingram? None: and that you know. What love has she for me? None: as I have taken pains to prove: I caused a rumour to reach her that my fortune was not a third of what was supposed, and after that I presented myself to see the result; it was coldness both from her and her mother. I would not -- I could not -- marry Miss Ingram. You -- you strange, you almost unearthly thing! -- I love as my own flesh. You -- poor and obscure, and small and plain as you are -- I entreat to accept me as a husband."

"What, me!" I ejaculated, beginning in his earnestness -- and especially in his incivility -- to credit his sincerity: "me who have not a friend in the world but you -- if you are my friend: not a shilling but what you have given me?"

"You, Jane, I must have you for my own -- entirely my own. Will you be mine? Say yes, quickly."

"Mr. Rochester, let me look at your face: turn to the moonlight."

"Why?"

"Because I want to read your countenance -- turn!"

"There! you will find it scarcely more legible than a crumpled, scratched page. Read on: only make haste, for I suffer."

His face was very much agitated and very much flushed, and there were strong workings in the features, and strange gleams in the eyes

"Oh, Jane, you torture me!" he exclaimed. "With that searching and yet faithful and generous look, you torture me!"

"How can I do that? If you are true, and your offer real, my only feelings to you must be gratitude and devotion -- they cannot torture."

"Gratitude!" he ejaculated; and added wildly -- "Jane accept me quickly. Say, Edward -- give me my name -- Edward -- I will marry you."

"Are you in earnest? Do you truly love me? Do you sincerely wish me to be your wife?"

"I do; and if an oath is necessary to satisfy you, I swear it."

"Then, sir, I will marry you."

Rochester
This is your room Jane Eyre. It belongs to you. Won't you stay? Oh, couldn't you see that I've been falling in love with you all this time?

Jane
But Lady Blanche...

Rochester
Oh, that ended in London. I realized then that what I wanted most I'd left behind. You, Jane.

Jane
And all this time you let me think it was for her?

Rochester
Well I thought that if you liked the house well enough, you might be willing to take me along with it as a part of a lesser evil.

Jane
It was mean of you to trick me like that. You mustn't anymore. You must never deceive me again.

Your bride, Miss Ingram, stands between us.

Rochester
Jane, Jane! What love have I for Miss Ingram? None. None! You, I love as my own flesh. You small and plain and little and obscure, I entreat you to accept me as a husband.

Jane
What of Miss Ingram?

Rochester
I feigned courtship with her, I wanted to render you as madly in love with me as I was with you. I knew jealousy would be the best ally I could call in for the furtherance of that end. Oh Jane, be mine. Say yes.

Jane
Do you truly love me, sir?

Rochester
I do. I swear it. And you will marry me. You will marry me, say yes, Jane, say it quickly! Say yes Edward I will be your wife. Say yes I will be Mrs. Rochester tomorrow! Say it.

Jane
Yes Edward, I will be your wife. I will be Mrs. Rochester in four weeks time.

Jane
Lady Ingram...

Rochester
I tried to pierce your eye and protected little heart with jealousy. It was cruel and clumsy, but I have no skill now. I can only say that I love you more than anything else in life.

Jane
I understand my longing for you now. I've never dreamt that such few words could bring such peace. But I wish I knew the suffering in your eyes. The torture...

Rochester
Finish it for me Jane. Marry me.

Jane
What do you mean?

Rochester
Jane, you are my second self
And Jane, don't you see the truth?
That you are the heart of my life

Jane
But what of Blanche?

Rochester
She's gone, never to return
The Gypsy told her that my wealth
Wasn't half of my first claim
And Blanche Ingram, bless her heart
Took the bait and not my name.
I would not- I could not - have married Blanche Ingram. Because my equal is here, and my likeness.

Jane
Why did you make me believe you loved her?

Rochester
To make you jealous?

Jane
Why?

Rochester
Jane, to make you as in love with me
As I am in love with you
By my wife
Say my name!

Jane
Edward!

Rochester
Will you marry me, Jane Eyre?
You mean more to me than life
What's your answer?
Tell me now!
Do you consent to be my wife? God forgive me! You're not getting away from me!
If I had a string under my ribs
Knotted to you, connecting our frames
I'd be afraid that many a mile
Would sever the tie
And I would take to bleeding inwardly

Are you my saviour, are you my saint
Protecting me now with communion and light?
Stand as my eauqal, be my reward
Slay custom and code
With love as your sword
Childish, slender creature.

My hope of heaven lies
Inside your precious eyes
I hear your cherished voice
Across the moorland skies.

Will I not guard and cherish you
As long as I shall live?
Will I not sanction you
With all the love my heart can give?
And I wash my hands
Of every youthful crime
Defy them all
God will give me time
Andyou will lead me blind...

Jane
Yes, sir, I will marry you.

*No audio since it is in Hindi. Not sure where to start this since the dialogue is not like the dialogue from the novel. Also, the transcript is from the subtitles so doubtless, the actual language used would work better in the movie. And perhaps may be more like Bronte's words than I think.

Kamal (Jane)
Have you found time?

Shankar (Rochester)
Yes, at last I have found all the time. Do you know what she was saying Kamal?

Kamal
No I don't want to know.

Shankar
Listen, Kamal, don't turn your face away like this. My heart starts to sink. These lonely nights are a witness of how a drowning man is desperately searching for you. If you turn your face away from me you'll commit a sin.

Kamal
I have never turned my face away from you. Why are you accusing me falsely?

Shankar
What is the gurantee that you may find me worthless and cast me away?

Kamal
Why? Is that what you expect from me?

Shankar
I don't expect it, but I fear it. Just say it once and this fear will go away.

Kamal
What shall I say?

Shankar
Just do it once Kamal.

Kamal
What shall I do?

Shankar
Just kiss this sinner once with your lips. So that this dying man may get some life back. I'm closing my eyes Kamal. Give me whatever you wish- life or death. Without you this life was barren Kamal. Even after getting you I can't believe it. You are before my eyes, but my heart does not trust. It keeps repeating, that Shankar all this is a dream, don't believe it. This dream will vanish again, so beware of it, beware of it. May this moment last. Make me believe that you have really come to me Kamal. So that all my doubts and fears go away.

Kamal
Shankar...

Shankar
Kamal... What heaven are you taking me to, away from this hell, Kamal? Even if it is a dream, I am prepared to give my whole life. I am prepared to sacrifice my whole life for it Kamal.
